Utility

In economics, utility is a measure of satisfaction, referring to the total satisfaction received by a consumer from consuming a good or service. Given this measure, one may speak meaningfully of increasing or decreasing utility, and thereby explain economic behavior in terms of attempts to increase one's utility. Utility is often modeled to be affected by consumption of various goods and services, possession of wealth and spending of leisure time. The doctrine of utilitarianism saw the maximization of utility as a moral criterion for the organization of society. According to utilitarians, such as Jeremy Bentham (1748–1832) and John Stuart Mill (1806–1873), society should aim to maximize the total utility of individuals, aiming for "the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people". Another theory forwarded by John Rawls (1921–2002) would have society maximize the utility of those with the lowest utility, raising them up to create a more equitable distribution across society. Utility is usually applied by economists in such constructs as the indifference curve, which plot the combination of commodities that an individual or a society would accept to maintain a given level of satisfaction. Individual utility and social utility can be construed as the value of a utility function and a social welfare function respectively. When coupled with production or commodity constraints, under some assumptions, these functions can be used to analyze Pareto efficiency, such as illustrated by Edgeworth boxes in contract curves. Such efficiency is a central concept in welfare economics. In finance, utility is applied to generate an individual's price for an asset called the indifference price. Utility functions are also related to risk measures, with the most common example being the entropic risk measure. From Wikipedia under the

From Google Video Search: "utility" How can I lower my utility bill without penalizing my family? Q. I'd like some tips of how I can lower my utility bill but without taking any drastics measures. We have televisions, computers, and all sorts of appliances that cannot be unplugged. We try to keep the thrmostats set moderately, but it's an old drafty house. We don't have the funds to reside or rewindow it right now. Asked by wendy2pann - Sun Oct 5 13:40:29 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. If possible, close off areas of the house which are not used on a regular basis. ie. basement, offices, extra bedrooms. Close the air vents to those areas (don't allow them to freeze). You may be able to seal the windows and doors with a silicone sealant, which will help a little. Have your attic checked to see if the level of insulation is sufficient. Heavy shades or drapes over the 'cold' windows, especially at night or during windy storms. I do my heavy baking/cooking in the winter - early morning - and that warms up the living area. Buy some fun, snugly comforters for the kids at night, and bring home lightweight underclothing for winter. My sis loves cuddle-duds. Good Luck. Answered by CrimsonSnow - Sun Oct 5 14:19:56 2008 How do I make a simple houshold circuit with a utility battery?
Q. Okay, so I have a utility battery (which basically is like a car battery) and I am going up north for the summer and I want to be able to run a stereo. But because there is no electricity at the place I'm going it's not just plugging it into a wall. Also I want to run a big stereo not one of the small ones that you can carry around with D batteries in it. So I have the battery, and was hoping that some one could tell me where to go from here. My biggest worry is the current flow, do I need some type of converter to convert energy so that my stereo won't fry? Or will a switch and an outlet do the job. Thanks to anyone who can help me out. Asked by Flakes - Tue Jun 19 08:12:34 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. You need an inverter. I install AC (wall plugs) in cars so people can run tvs and plug in hair dyers when they are camping etc. You need to check to see how many watts your stero draws but here are some links to inverters Answered by jeremy s - Tue Jun 19 08:35:07 2007 From Yahoo Answer Search: "utility" |
