Building off-road vehicle, need engine and transmission, axles?
Q. I have a 1990 Ford Bronco that is receiving a 6" Rough Country suspension lift and 35" tires. This is strictly and off road vehicle for a patch of land in the Northwest, and while it may see some on road use, its going to be used only a few times a year and when it is, it will be miles away from anything. Problem: locating a decent engine, transmission, and some axles for the thing. I know of some shops willing to sell them to me, but none that will ship to my location out west and none that I really trust. I can find TONS of shops online willing to sell engines and transmissions but mostly they are performance pieces, not geared towards the off-road. Best off road vehicle for mud riding?
Q. I was thinking about buying an off road vehicle to go mud riding and stuff in.. Can you please tell me what the best kind would be? And also would a stick or automatic be better? I was thinking about a jeep wrangler.. are those good vehicles? also, i dont want to get stuck in the mud so what kind of motor would be best power for this activity? Thank you!!
Asked by Catrina - Mon Jun 16 14:52:12 2008 - - 6 Answers - 1 Comments
A. The jeep wrangler is the best to go with. There are plenty of upgrades available at reasonable costs, and they are pretty good right out of the factory. Just make sure you get the highest gear ratio possible, and an antislip diff. Auto or Manual is your choice, they will both work well.

Has anyone ever been arrested for riding an off road vehicle on the street?
Q. I recently was told by a cop where I live, in MD that next time I ride I'll be arrested. I just wanted to know if anyone's ever actually been arrested for it.

A. No but you could be. Driving a vehicle on a street means it has to be registered and insured. You must also be licensed. There are a wide variety of charges you could face.

Is it illegal to take your vehicle off road in North Carolina?
Q. Is it illegal to take a truck off road in North Carolina? My husband got two tickets because he was on a trail off of a road with his vehicle. The ranger said that he was not allowed to be there and wrote him one ticket for destruction of U.S. property and another for going off of an established road. There were no marked signs... ANYWHERE... and I can't find anything about it being illegal while looking online.
Asked by usmc467wife - Sun Dec 20 14:58:47 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The laws are the same for all states and the driver must look for the posted Off-Road Trail Signs which are the same here in Texas... These signs are posted for all drivers to see but you cannot just drive off any road and go 4-wheeling because you will be fined as your husband did its always best to search out 4-wheel trails in your area before doing this...

Looking for a good off-road vehicle to go camping in?
Q. I have a subaru outback-impreza (aka impreza sport) and i love it but i'm looking for something more off road like...i jeep. But i have recently heard bad things about jeeps. One of my friends had 3 die on them, and the other said their friend has never got his running right. another one of my friends has an automatic wrangler and loves it. anyhow I want a manual transmission and something built like a jeep so its good for off-road junk & something i can thrown all my camping gear in the back of, but i'm just looking for input on jeeps and other good off-road vehicles. give me your advice and opinions.

A. Go to Yahoo Groups and just type in 'jeep' and see how many jeep groups are out there...THAT is where you will find your answers. If one person you know had THREE jeeps die on him/her-then they are NOT taking care of them...jeeps are well known for being the hardest vehicle to 'kill'...and the typical jeep isn't even well used at 100,000 miles-they easily go over 200,000 if taken care of.

What is a good off-road vehicle?
Q. My wife and I recently moved to a town in western Arkansas. There's a lot of fun stuff to do and places to go that are down rough, gravel forest service roads. We have a small car for highway travel and a 3/4 ton pickup for trailer-hauling, but we have to take it easy with them on the gravel. We would like to buy a little SUV that we don't have to worry about when driving fast on a rough road. It also needs to handle a little mud and some minor rock crawling. So... What is a good vehicle that is easy to work on, can usually be bought for $1000-$1500, and has stood the test of time to prove it a good off-road vehicle. Any help or guidelines of what to look for will be appreciated.

Is installing a "lift kit" for a vehicle the same as installing an "off road package"?
Q. An "off road package" in this case is defined as special suspension, shocks, and tires.
Asked by genghisstone - Fri Jan 9 15:50:04 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. A lift kit just lifts your vehicle whether it be adding spacers on your front springs or blocks to the rear end. AN offroad pkg, like you said, is usually suspensiondesigned to withstand the extreme conditions which you take it offroad

Q. i have reduced the thickness to match the pulsar disc

A. When you are using Maruti 800 disc brakes then also use the Caliper of Maruti. You can use the caliper of any car/bike as long as you have arrangements for mouting them and it has wide enough opening for the rotor to move freely . Mostly all calipers are of Floating type and shoud work fine as long as the psiton travel is within its stroke limits

Would you make your friend pay for your off road vehicle if they rolled it?
Q. We went off roading with a friend, and were riding on his quads. My husband rolled the quad about 5 minutes before we left for the day. The quad actually looks really good, minus the scratches on the fenders, and hand protectors. Our friend is insisting that we pay to have his quad put back into mint condition. We know that my husband was being a dork, and shouldn't have rolled the quad, but seriously it is an off road vehicle!! DUH, isn't it going to get some scratches eventually?? What would you do? Are we being rude for not wanting to pay for the small damage? We did offer to fix it, and we actually plan on fixing it. We are just shocked and suprised that a "friend" would be so shallow. We would say, "hey don't worry about it!"… [cont.]

A. Both are being silly. He should expect some damage eventually and he did let you all ride. But then again , it is his and you all should feel bad for messing it up and probably should have offered to fix it.
