Can I use concrete piers to install 4x4 wooden fence post?
Q. A recent wind storm snapped 2 of my 4x4 cedar fence posts, taking 3 panels with them. I'd like to know if I can pour concrete piers and attach the 4x4 posts to the top of them slightly above ground-level with metal anchors. I used them for a lean-to on my house, and they worked great. The area of my yard is low-lying so it is often wet, and I thought if I buried the posts, they would eventually rot like the originals.

A. Yes you can, but will need to be cast "in one". Another method is the people who make the anchors - also make a spiked version. I have used them as a repair and was quick. Maybe a simpler method would be to cast piers - with a pipe in the centre. That way if they go again, you can just slot in a new one. Use wedges or stakes to pack them out and get true. Soak the post ends in dark creosote for a few days too - this is better than the chemically treated ones, as it actually stops the water from penetrating in the first place. Let dry under cover for 2 days after treatment or you risk ground contamination. Once it's soaked in - no problems.

What's the difference between 4X4 Auto and All Wheel Drive on a Ford Explorer?
Q. On a Ford Explorer, what is the difference between a 4X4 Auto and AWD? In the brief description they give on the website, they kind of sound the same. I used to have a 97 Ford Explorer with AWD. The description of the 4X4 Auto feature today sounds exactly like the AWD from 97. Why can't they just give us the old fashion 2WD, 4WD High and 4WD Low feature? (that must make too much sense).
Asked by - Wed Apr 21 15:28:33 2010 - Ford - 3 Answers - Comments

A. Auto 4x4 (full time 4WD) and AWD are the same in that they both distribute power to the wheels automatically. However, the Auto 4x4 also allows the user manually switch to 4WD High and 4WD Low, whereas the AWD doesn't offer low-range gearing.

What do you think is the best 4x4 on the road?
Q. I've driven a 1991 Mitsubishi Montero for years and I love it. Even though there are a lot of 4x4 vehicles they all seem like luxury yachts by comparison. The once tough Jeep Cherokee has mutated into a suburban Mc Mansion on wheels that nobody would dare take off road. For somebody looking for a bare bones 4x4 what would you recommend? I'd like to stay away from the Wrangler, only because it has no real storage room, and being in the Army I tend to move around a lot.

A. Land Rover Defender. Good call on staying away from the Cheep Wrangler, you want something that's for adults/men that won't get stuck and is completely reliable.

How much would it cost to convert a 1982 chevy silverado from a 4x4 to a 4x2?
Q. Im wanting to buy a truck that has been all gone through from my godfather but my mom wont let me get a 4x4 truck cause of gas and insurance, so I wanna know what its going to cost me to convert it to a two wheel drive. Thanks.
Asked by - Wed Nov 17 17:25:55 2010 - Chevrolet - 6 Answers - Comments

A. instead of looking at how to convert the truck from 4x4 to 2 wheel drive, suggest that you research the Chevy 4x4 trucks. the 4 wheel drive is a safer truck, especially in the winter driving conditions. if the truck has manual hubs on the front axle, then the gas mileage is only a little less than 2wd. also contact the insurance company and discuss insurance rates, on a truck as old as this one there may not be much or any difference in the rate. my main suggestion is to do your homework and find all the positive reasons for owning a 4x4 truck. hope this helps

Q. My 2000 Dodge 4x4 truck has a V8 with an auto transmission, I had the battery checked it was fine, when you turn the key you can hear nothing, dash lights light up but total blank no ticking. I tried to start it in neutral and messed with the shifter still nothing, What else can I try?
Asked by spado - Sat Sep 5 16:12:49 2009 - Maintenance & Repairs - 4 Answers - Comments

A. Look under the vehicle at the rear left side of the transmission. The Neutral Safety/Reverse switch is right there and is a three prong device with a round wire boot that goes over the switch. Either the switch is faulty (had to change the one in my Ram B2500 Van) and/or the wiring harness is unhooked or ripped apart. If you are good with electronic then you can take the harness and put a jumper wire in the center part, not the two outer wire only the center) and ground it to the transmission or frame and then try to start the truck, if it starts replace the switch, it is less than 30 dollars at an auto parts store.

What is the point of a 4x4 when it disengages at 25mph+?
Q. I am planning on buying a Rav 4 Either I-4 4X4 or a 4X2 V6 ( same price). I will be driving it in minor snow, but the car also has traction and stability control.
Asked by amgbenz04 - Sun Dec 17 22:08:10 2006 - Safety - 2 Answers - Comments

A. Not all 4 x4's disengage at 25mph or more, in fact, most new models have the option for the driver to select, as well as the ability to select/deselect traction control. The objective of 4x4's are to produce more traction at slower speeds, therefore the engine idles less to create this added traction. At higher speeds, this will cause excessive fuel consumption and produce more dangerous driving conditions and less control by the driver.

What would be the best model of Toyota 4x4 truck to get?
Q. Should I get a pre1995 4x4 pickup or spend a little more on a 1995-1998 Tacoma? Or would it be better to fix up my old 1979 Toyota 4x4? Like a motor swap, lift kit, fix the rust and interior and all that good stuff? Which would yall suggest to do?
Asked by lonewolfshel - Tue Aug 7 15:05:46 2007 - Toyota - 7 Answers - Comments

A. I think that depends on how much work you want to do, or money you want to spend. Modern trucks are safer and more dependable. I have a 2007 Tacoma and it's awesome! But i would never take it off-road, at least not off a trail. If I were you and I had all the time i wanted and and all the money i needed, I would buy a newer truck(or new). Then i would fix up your 79' to be an off-road badass. Don't spend too much money on the body, spend it all on the suspension, engine, tranny, diffs, and so on.

How should I anchor an 8 foot 4x4 pole for a very heavy birdhouse?
Q. I set a 10" lag bolt into a 20" deep hole filled with concrete. I plan to bolt a simpson strong tie onto the concrete base and screw the 4x4 to that. I'm worried, thought that the leverage of the 8 foot post plus the weight of the birdhouse will be too much for it. Any ideas?
Asked by jcole208 - Wed Nov 5 22:51:40 2008 - Garden & Landscape - 3 Answers - Comments

A. If I am correct you already poured the concrete and set the anchor bolt. Then the post anchor you mentioned is not the correct product for what you want to accomplish. Unless you want to remove the concrete you already poured and start over then you need to set up some lateral bracing. Any type of bracing would not look great. The easiest thing for you to do is just dig a second hole next to the poured concrete. Put the post in and refill with the dirt and compact the dirt as you backfill. You could also just remove the poured concrete and use that hole. The 8 foot post with the feeder does not need concrete around it. Compacted dirt fill will be strong enough for a feeder. But if you want the top of the post to be 8 foot above ground then… [cont.]

What does the 4X4 module for 2002 Ford Explorer look like?
Q. My 2002 Ford Explorer started jerking when it hits 20-35 mph. and uphill. Have heard lots of suggestions, that it is the tire size, transmission, and possibly the 4X4 module. Tried to put the car into 4X4 high and the jerking stopped and it would not go into 4X4 low. Do not want to pay $800.-$1000. to be fixed until I can research about the module.
Asked by M M - Mon May 19 14:04:34 2008 - Ford - 1 Answers - Comments

A. The module would not cause the jerking. The low function will not work unit the truck is in neutral and speed below 5 mph. The jerking could be engine, transmission, transfer case, rear end. Putting the truck in 4x4 could have changed the load on the engine. I would suggest getting the truck diagnosed by a shop. If it is an engine performance issue or misfires there should be evidence of it in the ECM. If it is a transfer case or transmission problem an examination of the fluid should give some indication if there is something wrong with them. It sounds like you have gotten a lot of info, but It is really hard to diagnose something like this without looking at it. Call around, some shops like Aamco and others will diagnose vehicles for… [cont.]

Q. I am thinking of getting a new truck. I currently drive a Ford F150 4x4. I understand FWD, RWD, AWD, and 4WD (4x4), but am confused as to exactly what a 4x2 is.
Asked by epranch - Thu Feb 8 15:39:20 2007 - Other - Cars & Transportation - 7 Answers - Comments

A. 4x2 is a rear wheel drive truck. fwd is a front only transaxle rwd has a ujoint at the tailshaft of the trans and goes straight to the rear axle AWD is usually a modified FWD, you cannot shift from rear to four, or high to low awd is not 4X4!!! 4X4 MUST have a Transfer case that shifts from rear wheel high gear to 4 wheel high gear to 4 wheel low gear. awd is not 4X4!!!

How many pepper plants can I grow in a 4x4 raised bed garden?
Q. I am new new to this ! Right now I have 9 plants in a 4x4 space. 3 Tabasco Peppers, 3 bell pepper 1 Habenero and 1 red Bell. I'm sure I'm doing this wrong. What should I take out? How many should put in that space from now on? Thank You!
Asked by - Thu May 26 21:20:19 2011 - Garden & Landscape - 4 Answers - Comments

A. I have very similar sized raised beds that I have grown peppers in for several years. I always put the plants on the perimeter a little closer to the edge so the plants in the middle have enough room. I put 6 or 8 plants in a 2' x 4' bed, so you should be fine and might even be able to add a couple. Some plants grow outward a little more than upward, but the 9 you've planted so far will be fine and you've given them more than enough room. I love the peppers because they are such lovely, small, easy to care for plants that grow in a lot of different soil types. Plus, most varmints and furry creatures don't usually have much to do with them, especially the Habeneros.

How to disconnect 4x4 on a 2000 ford explorer?
Q. I have a 2000 ford explorer xls 4x4 which has been jumping into 4x4 at random on dry flat pavement. After ford having it for two weeks, and replacing the shifting motor and 4x4 relay to no avail, I had them remove the front driveshaft. It now obviously cannot drive the front wheels, but the lights still flash and I was wondering if the transfer case still trying to go into 4x4 would wear on the transmission and if there are any fuses or anything I should disconnect to stop it from attempting to shift into 4x4.

How do I disengage the low 4x4 on my 2000 Explorer?
Q. It's stuck there and won't change back to Auto 4x4. I tried turning the vehicle off and restarting it but it is still stuck there. I've got to be able to drive it regularly too. According to the manual it needs to be in park or neutral. It doesn't help.

A. I suggest reading your owners manual. Some 4X4 vehicles have to be rolling around 5 mph to disengage from low to normal, when you making the switch.

When year is the PS400 4X4 car tax increase going to actually happen?
Q. I have seen various questions about the car tax increase for the 4X4's but when is this likely to come into effect? 2008, 2009? Does this not apply to older cars?
Asked by Sunflower - Thu Aug 7 10:53:46 2008 - Buying & Selling - 2 Answers - Comments

A. There is no specific 4x4 tax in the UK. The tax you are referring to applies to all cars first registered after a certain date that have official CO2 emissions greater than a certain amount. The PS400 rate applies now to all cars (except alternative fuel cars) first registered on or after 23rd March 2006 with official CO2 emissions greater than 225g/km. From next April the bands and rates change, and all rates will apply to all cars first registered on or after 1st March 2001.

A. One is two wheel drive, the other is four wheel drive. If you plan on riding in a lot of mud or doing a lot of rock crawling, or riding on soft mushy terrain you may want the four wheel drive. If you are going to be riding on dry packed trails most of the time the two wheel drive would be just fine.

A. The 2x4s are BETWEEN the 4x4's? Yes, that is hard to get in the right angle. You have a couple options. You can get longer screws. I'm talking like 4 inches long. Go in at about a 45 degree angle. My suggestion, don't go between the 4x4s, but across the face. Go from the end of the 1st to the center of the 2nd, center of 2nd to center of the next, etc, to the end of the last. Then, you can screw straight through the front into the posts at a 90 degree angle. Then put the 1x6 across the top, it will hang over about 1/2" on both sides.
